Kendrick Bangs Kellogg's Masterful Organic Architecture in Joshua Tree

desert house

The space, recessed into the hillside with a solid earthen wall to lean your back against as you survey the horizon is a literal campsite which finds its precedent in the native cliff dwellings of the south west. Our client had given us a brief but compelling instruction at the start of the process - to build a house like a shadow. This had a very specific relevance to the desert area where the sunlight is often so bright that the eye's only resting place is the shadows. Beyond the technical and regulatory challenges of building on the site - several previous owners had tried and given up - there was the challenge of how to build appropriately on such a sublime and pristine site. This project began with an e-mail and a meeting in fall of 2008 for a house in Yucca Valley, which is located near Palm Springs, east of Los Angeles in the high desert near the Joshua Tree National Park. Both this space and the adjoining bedroom wing feature black walls inside as well as out, intended to create a "cave-like feeling".

Cantilevered beam supports, steel columns, and overhangs make the project appear to hover. Glass partitions were used to separate the interior while allowing views to the desert and mountains. Only the pale blue of the window glass can be seen through the immaculate white walls of Four Eyes House, which is made up of many isolated blocks.

Expansive walls of glass frame picturesque views of the desert terrain, while clerestory windows provide glimpses of distant mountain peaks. This spectacular contemporary desert house designed by Tate Studio Architects is situated near Pinnacle Peak in Scottsdale, Arizona. The owner of this dwelling was originally from Newport Beach, California, seeking a more expansive living space after residing in a condo for several years. Black is not the first color that comes to mind when thinking of desert houses which is what makes this particular structure quite peculiar.

Desert Houses That Are Real-Life Oases

Aside from its eye-catching appearance, desert homes should maximize climatic elements to produce comfortable rooms. This highly insulated desert house, which is shaded by its own fly-roof and has no thermal bridging, draws its cool air from the shaded ground below. When necessary, a robust outer layer protects a glazed inner courtyard which in turn lets out the hot air. Vegas is renowned for its eclectic architecture even in the midst of the wild desert. Each piece in this desert house represents the stratification of the surrounding Red Rock Mountains.

The Tucson Mountain Lava House is located in the Tucson Mountains’ eastern alluvial flow. It is called a lava house because a crushed volcanic cinder serves as the construction material for the home’s exterior. The desert house is situated in such a way that it borders both desert terrain and waterways. A unique floating roof shelters a tapestry of spaces between existing water courses and the ancient Sonoran Desert. The eco-friendly house combines a classic Cortijo, or Andalusian farmhouse, with contemporary spaces.

Additionally, the Harrises were able to have a long-closed section of a Utah quarry re-opened to mine matching stone to replace what had been removed or damaged. To help restore the desert buffer Neutra had envisioned for the house, the Harrises also bought several adjoining plots to more than double the land around the 3,200-square-foot (300 m2) house. The Kaufmann House, or Kaufmann Desert House, in Palm Springs, California, was designed by Richard Neutra in 1946.

With Its Striking Natural Surroundings

A Southwest house plan is designed specifically for this region and pays homage to its unique history. These homes include elements of Spanish colonial and native adobe architecture and are made to address the challenging sun and heat conditions of the American Southwest. An Arizona residence, the Stone Court Villa was created as multiple open and enclosed spaces defined by stacked limestone walls. With varying degrees of access between the landscape and the building occupants, the villa utilizes monolithic material expression and minimal distinctive elements. The weaving stone walls help establish the circulation back and forth across open and carved spaces.

The Future of Architecture: 7 Master Plans That Rethink the Way

Throughout, there is a strong connection between the indoors and outdoors, reinforced through large swaths of glazing and shade-inducing vertical aluminum louvers that are also one of the home’s highlights. Vertical aluminum louvers, providing protection against the harsh desert heat, are also a striking design feature of the Kaufmann Desert House. Best known for his eponymous Pittsburgh department store, Kaufmann revered good design.

From faucets to light bulbs and everything in between, the design team at Visionary Homes helps buyers create interior spaces that reflect their unique personality and lifestyle. Nowhere is that more apparent than Joshua Tree with its many artist residences, rugged rock formations, and stark desert landscapes. As you approach the dwelling in a sort of entry sequence, a series of playfully engaging concrete steps slowly unfolds and dissolves into the desert. Located on an isolated stretch in the desert, this dwelling is positioned in such a way as to take full advantage of the surrounding views, existing wind patterns, and the trajectory of the sun. The scheme incorporates the vistas by visually expanding into the surrounding landscape, making the desert become part of the interior and merging the inside with the outside. Reflecting and engaging the surrounding arid landscape, the low-lying structures that make up this dwelling frame a series of courtyards and covered terraces.

After obtaining his architecture degree, Aaron D’Innocenzo decided to build his own dream home in the Mojave desert – no contractors, just his own vision and eight years of hard work. This time Design Build Bluff came to the aide of Harold and Helena Skow, who were building a home from a traditional kit but running into problems. Sleek and minimal, the house opens every zone and room to the mountainous desert overgrown with cacti. Featuring mirrored windows that reflect desert landscapes, the fresh house takes advantage of the terrain to provide residents with privacy.

The project’s central courtyard becomes enveloped by delicate detailing, sculpted living quarters, and split volumes that combine to create the powerful design. The desert house in Santa Fe reflects the dry landscape’s diverse features through several courtyards and covered terraces. Its rusty metal, concrete, and stucco construction gives it a homely appearance.

If you’ve ever wanted to ditch your snowy, chilly, or rainy stomping grounds for the heat of the desert, the following eight homes designed specifically for the desert will inspire those with even the most frugal budget. Using five 20-foot long shipping containers, EcoTech constructed a custom, 2,300 square foot home for a client in the heart of the Mojave. Blu Homes has created a chic desert getaway in southern California by combining two of its Origin modules into one beautiful home.

The result is a harmonious structure that, for all its splendor, still manages to blend into its rocky surroundings. Photographer and designer Lance Gerber, who is drawn to modern, minimal architecture, had the formidable task of documenting the home. Such a spectacular design requires a good eye and sensitivity to capture its artistry both inside and out. Creativity and ingenuity are a big part of what makes projects like this one successful.

It is the home’s harmonious sitting with the desert’s natural forces which allows seamless daily and seasonal patterns to embody every aspect of the client’s life. The home, which is dotted with several patios and a terrace, exploits the wind direction to keep the interiors cool. The walls are built of Kershef, a typical local construction material comprised of mud, sand, and salt from neighboring salt lakes. With spectacular vistas of the golden desert, Ecolodge was made from materials that could be found nearby, including mud, sun-fired bricks, palm wood, reeds, and stone. The residence blends with the natural surroundings by using traditional Siwan construction methods. Compact Ronoldino Residence is an eco-friendly oasis in the Nevada high desertAn Italian journalist who fell in love with the desert decided to move there with the help of Nottoscale.

It was one of the last domestic projects conducted by the architect, but it is also arguably one of his most famous homes. Thanks to Gerber's work, we can gain an appreciation of how Kellogg's organic forms carry through to the interior, where Vugrin strategically placed just a few pieces of furniture. In this way, the concrete petals are the star, creating large, open spaces that feel part of their environment rather than like an intruder. As much a sculpture as it is a residence, Kendrick Bangs Kellogg's High Desert House is an incredible achievement in organic architecture.

This is nottoscale’s prototype of a prefabricated building system, T-modulome, first developed in 2002. Built for an independent writer, the house lies on an isolated stretch near Scotty’s Junction in Nevada desert. This house by Wendell Burnette Architects is shrouded in a surface of patinated metal to blend in with the surrounding granite boulders and cacti.
